“Girl, Wash Your Face” written by Rachel Hollis is exactly what it sounds like: a refreshing start to your day, or a reminder to do so anyways (ha)! This book quickly became one of the top sellers (I think #2 actually) of 2018, even though it didn’t come out until literally the middle/end of the year. I can for sure see why & I tried to break it down in as little words as possible and without giving away too much information. Partly because I don’t want to be a book spoiler & partly because I literally want everyone to read this book. Simply said- if you are looking for a book with actual advice that’s real and you can relate to- this book is for you!
“You are worthy of not letting your past dictate your future”- Rachel Hollis
It is written good, like really good
Rachel Hollis is an amazing writer! She has way of breaking down words where it’s not like you’re reading a book, but more like reading a letter or referring to an old conversation from a best friend. And not just any best friend either-from your girl that you can tell anything & everything to with no judgement at all! One thing I really liked about this book was the format. Each chapter is titled as a “Lie” that you tell yourselves and she spends the next pages following with how it’s not true. She tells stories of her own personal experiences, from things she learned from a therapist to being in Hollywood, from family issues- she tells it all. I know some who have read this book like one chapter every couple of days- literally just soaking in the wisdom from 10 or so pages at a time, not wanting to miss anything. At the end of each chapter, there is also a section called “Things that helped me” where Rachel rounds up like 3 things that helped her even more through the “lie” she was telling herself, just for anyone (aka most of us) who need a tad bit more encouragement!
“Friends, it’s not about the goal or the dream that you have. It’s about who you become on the way to that goal”- Rachel Hollis
Get Your Highlighter!
There are so many quotes from this book that I constantly found myself looking for a highlighter in the beginning that I decided to just use one as a bookmark instead (ha!). One of my favorites came early on in the book- “Life isn’t meant to be merely survived- it’s meant to be lived”. There are so, so many things I highlighted in the book in nearly almost every chapter- you would think I was studying for a class or something if you saw my copy. I said earlier how I love how relatable this book is, and it honestly is just that. Sometimes, books like this are filled with stuffy, cliche advice such as “you only live once”, blah blah blah (you know what I’m saying). This book is filled with quotes and such that you can use on a consistent basis. Like I said, it’s filled with actual real life experience vs just heresy or words written on a page. I jotted down some of my favs below, because if you don’t read the book- you should at least know these things:
“Comparison is the death of joy, and the only person you need to be better than is the one you were yesterday.”
“Our words have power, but our actions shape our lives.”
I took so, so much away from this book & I probably will make an effort to read it again in the near future. If you are any women between the age of getting out of college or 50+ just trying to figure out some things, this book is for you. Girl, Wash Your Face is honestly a book for anyone who just wants someone to relate to, or even a good laugh. If you’ve been contemplating this book only because you’ve been seeing it all over social media, the hype is real & your intuition is right! Or, if you’re hearing about this book for the first time- just trust me and buy it anyways. Either way- you will be happy you did and it will be a great start to your year!
This book reminded me of many things: that life is what we make it and it’s okay to admit that you work too much sometimes. That comparison is real & very normal, but not to let it become your normal. That everyone has days where they doubt themselves, but what matters is how you act after. And finally- the fact that a good laugh is always needed. “Girl, Wash Your Face” was the reminder that no matter how big (or small) someone seems or how much success they have accomplished- everyone has been through something & has their own stories to tell. What books have you read lately? I’m on a goal of reading 1 book a month & trying to figure out Februarys pick!
